Westport Police say they received a report from a woman who claimed that she had been involved in a physical altercation with her boyfriend on Saturday, Oct. 6 around 4:15 a.m.

The woman stated that a verbal argument with Bartholomew (Buddy) Valiante at her home caused him to shove her, prompting her to defend herself, police say.

The report further stated that a physical struggle ensued, and Valiante struck her several times in the face, pulled her hair and choked her, police say.

The woman reported that she struck Valiante in the face with a small wooden shelf when she was being choked in an act of self-defense, according to police. She claimed that when she told Valiante she was going to call police, he threw her phone into the backyard of the residence, prompting her to go to a neighbor’s home to call 911, police say.

Police say the woman sustained multiple injuries that were consistent with her story.

Valiante, who allegedly reported to headquarters later that day, told officers that his girlfriend had become physical with him first and that he was acting in self-defense, police say.

Based on the investigation, Valiante was arrested and charged with third-degree strangulation, third-degree assault and disorderly conduct.

Valiante was released after posting a $10,000 bond and was arraigned at Norwalk Superior Court on Monday, Oct. 7.
